Have you ever read a quote, saw a picture, or heard a song that really just took your breath away for a minute? That’s how I felt about this song. I heard it for the first time last week, and it’s been on my mind since then. The song is called Pieces by Amanda Cook, a singer for Bethel Music. Every word in these lyrics is so rich in truth. Take a few minutes to listen to this song. Let the words seep into your heart.

Isn’t that incredible? It’s almost too much to take in all at once. I listened to it multiple times!

The song begins with describing God’s love for us.

Unreserved, unrestrained
Your love is wild.
Your love is wild for me.
It isn’t shy, it’s unashamed.
Your love is proud
To be seen with me.

I love love love this section of the song! Unreserved is defined as “not restricted; full.” God’s love is so vast that is covers every person, regardless of circumstance. His love is greater than anything we could ever imagine. His love is wild, crazy, untamed. Romans 5:8 tells us that while we were still sinners, God sent His Son to die for us. God didn’t hold back anything He had, but sacrificed His own son because He loved us so dearly! That’s wild. God showers us with His love and mercy. Zephaniah 3:17 states, “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” He’s a proud Father.

The chorus states:

You don’t give Your heart in pieces.
You don’t hide Yourself to tease us.

We don’t have to earn God’s love. We don’t have to work for His favor or compete for a piece of His heart. He doesn’t give His heart in pieces, i.e., He only loves fully. He loves us with His whole heart. God knit us together in the womb (Psalm 139:13) and created us for a purpose. Joshua 1:9 reassures us that God is not hiding, but is instead always with us- “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Uncontrolled, uncontained.
Your love is a fire
Burning bright for me.
It’s not just a spark.
It’s not just a flame.
Your love is a light
That all the world will see.
All the world will see.

Deuteronomy 4:24 tells us, “For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” God’s love consumes every aspect of our lives. He desires all of us. He is righteously jealous when we turn our attention away from Him because He loves us so greatly. He is enthralled by our beauty (Psalm 45:11).

Your love’s not fractured.
It’s not a troubled mind.
It isn’t anxious.
It’s not the restless kind.
Your love’s not passive.
It’s never disengaged.
It’s always present.
It hangs on every word we say.
Love keeps its promises.
It keep its word.
It honors what’s sacred
‘Cause its vows are good.
Your love’s not broken.
It’s not insecure.
Your love’s not selfish.
Your love is pure.

This section makes me think of the common shortcomings of human love and how God’s love will be the only perfect love. The first thing I thought of was 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. God’s love is not inconsistent. He fully loves us all the time. We can trust in His promises, in His Word, and in His love. Unlike other people, He will never disappoint us. There is never a time when God questions His feelings for us based on our actions or when He feels apathetic towards us. God is constantly pouring out His love.

This is probably the most amount of times the word “love” has been used in one blog. But God’s love is so important to forming an intimate relationship with Him! I barely touched on the deeper meaning behind these lyrics, but I hope that this song serves as a reminder for the crazy, wild, all-consuming love that God has for you. Go back and listen to the song again. Know that this love that she’s singing about is for YOU!

Your friend,
